What I've learned from Ranger Football

09/23/2024

When I moved to Texas 20 years ago, I wondered why people didn't have anything better to do than Friday Night Lights.  Now, I understand.  There is nothing better than Friday Night Lights, especially since I have a football player #90.  I do all the Football Mom things: helmet shining, praying with the Mom's, Media day, decorated the cowbell & trucker hat, wear my son's #, decorated his football for the plaque, all the things.  I wouldn't miss a moment of this season.  I am fortunate to have two years of Fridays.  This past summer, we were in Cleveland for the Rugby National 7's championship in Canton and I went to the Professional Football Hall of Fame (and also the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Bon Jovi's unveiling).  It's been amazing.

My son began playing in 7th grade (he was worried I wouldn't let him play).  I really started learning football at Spring Branch Middle School (before I knew what a touchdown was and I knew who Joe Montana was).  I have learned so much about the plays and my son's positions.  He is a starting left guard (offense) this year.  I've learned what TFL is (tackle for loss), fumble, flag on the play, blocked punt, blocking vs. tackling.  It's been wonderful.

Lessons from football:

It's never too late

Don't give up on your dreams

Football quotes are the best

Teamwork is everything (there is no I in team)

Teamwork and Collaboration

Success Comes from Working Together:

  • Shared Goals: Football is a team sport, and success is achieved when everyone works toward a common goal. Players must communicate, trust each other, and rely on their teammates' strengths to win. This mirrors real life, where collaboration and teamwork often lead to greater outcomes.
  • Supporting Others: In football, players assist each other with passes, tackles, and support. In life, lending a hand to others, offering guidance, or sharing resources helps build a stronger community.
2. Resilience and Grit

Overcoming Adversity:

  • Persevering Through Challenges: Football players face obstacles like injuries, defeats, and setbacks, but the best teams and players show resilience by bouncing back stronger. Life, too, throws challenges our way, and football teaches us to persist, adapt, and keep striving even after failures.
  • Learning from Losses: Losses are inevitable, whether in football or life. Instead of being discouraged, players learn to reflect on their mistakes, improve, and come back better prepared. In life, setbacks are opportunities for growth and improvement.
3. Discipline and Hard Work

Effort Leads to Success:

  • Consistent Training: Success in football comes from hours of disciplined practice, proper conditioning, and preparation. Players train every day to hone their skills. This teaches us that consistent effort and hard work are critical to achieving success in any area of life.
  • Mental Toughness: Players must stay focused and disciplined both mentally and physically. In life, staying committed to your goals, even when motivation wanes, is essential for long-term success.
4. Leadership and Accountability

Taking Responsibility for Yourself and Others:

  • On and Off the Field: Football develops leadership skills, as captains and players must motivate their teammates, make quick decisions, and lead by example. In life, leadership often means taking responsibility, guiding others, and setting the tone for teamwork and respect.
  • Owning Your Mistakes: When a player makes an error, they must take responsibility for it and work to correct it. Life teaches us the same lesson: accountability is essential for personal and professional growth.
5. Adaptability and Flexibility

Being Open to Change:

  • Adjusting to the Game: In football, teams must constantly adapt to different opponents, strategies, and conditions. Successful players are flexible and quick to adjust their tactics. Life, too, requires us to adapt to changing circumstances and find new ways to succeed.
  • Improvisation: Sometimes, things don’t go as planned during a match. Players must think on their feet and make quick decisions. Life is unpredictable, and the ability to improvise and remain flexible can help you navigate unforeseen challenges.
6. Fair Play and Integrity

Honesty and Respect Matter:

  • Respect for Rules and Opponents: Football promotes the importance of playing fair, following the rules, and showing respect for opponents and referees. In life, integrity, honesty, and respect for others are fundamental to building trust and strong relationships.
  • Good Sportsmanship: Whether winning or losing, players are encouraged to display good sportsmanship. In life, how you handle success and failure—treating others with kindness and respect—defines your character.
7. Patience and Strategy

Long-Term Thinking:

  • Building a Game Plan: Football teams develop strategies based on careful analysis of their opponents and the situation. Patience is needed to wait for the right moment to strike. Similarly, in life, taking time to think strategically and plan for the future often leads to better results.
  • Delayed Gratification: Not every game is won in the first half. Football teaches the value of patience, waiting for the right opportunity, and playing the long game—a skill useful in both personal and professional life.
8. Communication Skills

The Power of Clear Communication:

  • On the Field: Effective communication is essential in football, whether it’s passing signals, calling for the ball, or strategizing with teammates. Clear, concise communication prevents confusion and maximizes efficiency.
  • In Life: Whether in relationships, work, or other interactions, communication is key. Being clear, direct, and open about your thoughts and needs helps build strong connections and avoid misunderstandings.
9. Emotional Control

Managing Emotions in High-Stress Situations:

  • Keeping Cool Under Pressure: Football can be an emotionally charged game, especially in high-stakes situations. Players need to stay calm, manage their emotions, and make rational decisions. In life, learning to control your emotions under pressure leads to better decision-making and reduces stress.
  • Dealing with Frustration: Mistakes happen in football, but getting frustrated only leads to more errors. Learning to stay composed and positive in frustrating situations is a valuable life lesson.
10. The Power of Preparation

Being Ready for Anything:

  • Pre-Game Preparations: Football players must prepare both physically and mentally before a match, studying opponents, practicing plays, and getting in the right mindset. Similarly, in life, success often depends on how well-prepared you are for opportunities and challenges.
  • Visualization: Many athletes use visualization to mentally rehearse success. In life, envisioning your goals and preparing for obstacles can make it easier to achieve your aspirations.
11. Finding Joy in the Journey

Enjoying the Process, Not Just the Outcome:

  • Passion for the Game: While winning is important, many football players play for the love of the game. The process—the training, the camaraderie, and the growth—is what brings fulfillment. In life, focusing on the journey rather than just the destination makes the experience richer and more meaningful.
  • Celebrating Small Wins: Just as every goal in football is celebrated, in life, we should celebrate our small victories, as they build momentum and confidence toward bigger successes.
