Emotion regulation is the ability to control and manage your emotional state. It involves being aware of your emotions, how you experience them, and how you express them. It can also help you think before you act and view situations in a more positive way. Here are some strategies that can help with emotion regulation: 

  • Mindfulness: Helps you become more aware of your emotions and the triggers that affect them. 
  • Breathing exercises: Can help calm and center you. 
  • Cognitive reappraisal: Involves recognizing and reevaluating your thoughts about a situation. 
  • Identifying triggers: Learning to recognize what triggers your emotional reactions can help with regulation. 

Other strategies include: getting enough sleep, exercising, and consulting a therapist. 

You can also try using a worksheet to track your mood, triggers, actions, and coping skills.  Pausing to collect your thoughts before you respond can be helpful.
